Opening mid-August 2011, Larry’s, named for famed local artist Larry Bell, pays homage to the renowned art community of Venice Beach under the direction of Chef Brendan Collins and Director of Operations Carolos Tomazos from Waterloo & City. Owners Mark and Erwin Sokol, of neighboring Hotel Erwin, Collins, and Tomazos designed Larry’s to be a casual, neighborhood gathering spot full of light, great food, and drinks to match, capturing the creative energy of its historic location a stone’s throw from the Venice Beach Boardwalk.
Collins brings his cuisine to the beach with a uniquely designed menu featuring daily Chalkboard specials, his beloved charcuterie and pizzas, and influences from France, Italy, and California, infused with a spot of his British humor, all $15 and under. Guests can order plates by denoting a desired quantity directly on the menu, similar to ordering sushi. Some sure-to-be favorites include BBQ Eel and Foie Gras Terrine with Muscat Gelee, Soy Reduction, Petite Salad, and Toast; Local Halibut and Scallop Ceviche with Nanjim Dressing, Cucumber Cilantro, and Red Onion; Green Gazpachotopped with Char-Grilled Squid Salad, Smoked Almonds, and Green Grapes; Zucchini Blossom and Shrimp Morachas with Seasoned Black Vinegar; and a Brussels Sprout Pizza with Benton’s Bacon, Parmesan, and Chili Vinegar.
Tomazos has curated a global beer and wine list to complement Collins’ cuisine and the creative Venice Beach diners. Larry’s serves an expansive, rotating selection of 26 draft beers in addition to select bottles from local, national, and international breweries ranging from $5-$28, including domestic favorites Ommegang Hennepin Farmhouse Saison from Cooperstown, New York and Green Flash West Coast IPA from San Diego, in addition to international brews like Green King Brewery’s Old Speckled Hen from England. Guests can also enjoy Wine and Soju-based cocktails for $10, such as the Coco Cabana with Soju, Lime, Mint, and Coconut Cream, and I Lassi, combining Moscato with Indian Spiced Chai, Lime, and Mango.
Kris Keith of Spacecraft executed Larry’s design as imagined by Mark and Erwin Sokol. The restaurant is inspired by the art of long-time family friend, Larry Bell, a pioneer of California Minimalism and widely known for his mirrored and translucent glass and plexiglass cubes of the 1960s. Almost a literal translation of a Larry Bell sculpture, Larry’s features a retractable glass wall connecting the interior bar area with the open-air dining patio, anchored by a mosaic tile fireplace and enclosed with glass.
Larry’s honors the influence Mr. Bell had on the Venice art community while celebrating the progression of Venice Beach as a whole. As such, Larry’s boasts an official “Art Wall” on the exterior, facing out to Windward Avenue, which features names of famed local artists that helped form the Venice art community. The Larry’s logo, positioned above the “Art Wall,” features a neon self-portrait of Mr. Bell, crafted by Highland Park-based neon artist, Ohashi.
Larry’s is located at 24 Windward Ave., Venice, CA 90291. The restaurant serves lunch from 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and dinner from 5-10:30 p.m. seven days a week. Larry’s will launch mid-afternoon, late-night, and brunch menus this fall. Public parking is available on adjacent streets, and paid lots and meters surround the area. Valet parking is available for $7 nightly, beginning at 6pm.
